Pop culture’s biggest weekend is happening in San Diego right now as the first official day of Comic-Con is underway. Just about every TV show, movie and amazingly, comic book, of relevance is at the show talking about what’s hot and what’s coming in the near future. For fans of everything from The Walking Dead to Dragon Ball to Bill f*****g Murray, it’s a chance to let out that inner geek and dress up, freak out and buy countless exclusive merchandise that will cost three to four times more when they hit eBay. See, sneakerheads? You’re not the only ones who have to deal with resellers.
When it comes to Comic-Con or any convention for that matter, you want to be comfortable when you’re walking the halls and running into people of varying degrees of cleanliness. However, in the case of Comic-Con you also want to show out, especially if you’re cosplaying. With sneaker brands branching out more and more each year to work with various established entertainment franchises, you’re going to see more and more of your favorite characters on your feet sooner than later. Can you imagine a year where Nike is at the show announce Orange Is The New Black Air Jordans or House Of Cards LeBrons. What? It could happen.
Anyways, here are the Top 10 Pop Culture Kicks To Wear To Comic Con.
10Any Air Mag-Inspired Sneaker
- Holy crap, @shoezeum has a boss collection of Air Mag kicks
- That Mattel hoverboard would be 88 times better if it was actually a hoverboard that uh, hovered…
Anyways, with 2015 being the actual year that Marty McFly traveled to in Back To The Future Part II, it’s only right that fans of the franchise pay homage to the film by rocking some Air Mag kicks to the Con. Not to mention that cosplaying as future McFly is probably an affordable option compared to dressing up as your favorite World of Warcraft character unless…
9The Actual Nike Air Mag
…You go for it and actually put down the money to buy the Nike Air Mag that released in 2011. I don’t know about you, but the idea of Fabolous at Comic-Con dressed up as Marty (kinda…) and driving up in a DeLorean sounds like something out of a fever dream.
8Nike Air Foamposite One “Paranorman”
Fun Fact: The chairman of Laika – the makers of Paranorman, Coraline and The Boxtrolls – is Phil Knight and his son Travis is the President and CEO. While their films have yet to hit the level of popularity that Dreamworks or Pixar experience, they have a strong cult following thanks to their strong characters and stop-motion animation style. Each film has also come with an accompanying sneaker tribute from Nike, but the most memorable was definitely the “Paranorman” Foamposite.
7adidas “Avengers: Age of Ultron” Pack
If you’re at Comic-Con, there’s a 100% chance you’re going to run into somebody cosplaying as one of the four Avengers featured in this pack. Not sure why adidas couldn’t make a sleek black T-Mac 2 for Black Widow though…
6Nike Zoom Kobe 5 (or 6) “Chaos”
A not-so-subtle homage to the iconic Batman villain (the late Heath Ledger’s performance in particular), the Joker is going to once again be a big deal with Jared Leto taking on the role in the Suicide Squad movie and possibly beyond since DC is preparing to build their own cinematic universe a la Marvel.
5The Hunger Games x Supra
I personally don’t know much about The Hunger Games books or films, but good on the studio to think outside the box and work with a brand like Supra. Maybe if they can get Jennifer Lawrence to rock a pair to the Con this year, it’ll get way more hype.
4Disney x Vans Collection
Thanks for the invite, Jazzy. No, I’m not bitter at all. Love you….
3Air Jordan 4 Doernbecher
Isaiah Scott – the kid who designed this classic Air Jordan 4 – deserves all the credit in the world for making a shoe that somehow makes Superman cool. Yeah, I said it…
2Star Wars x adidas Originals
Boba Fett, Stormtroopers, Darth Vader and Slave Leia are all Comic Con staples. There might not be any new Force Awakens footage at the presentation on Friday, but that won’t the stop the fans from lining up as early as Thursday. Expect to see more than a few pairs of adidas’ long-running partnership with Star Wars on display among the panel attendees, including the recent ZX Flux customs you could make on mi adidas.
1Mache’s Nike LeBron 10 “Devastator” Custom
I’m not one for hyperbole, but these are the most beautifulest kicks ever made, custom or not. The inspiration and shoe are perfect for each other and the Decepticon badges on the tongue shows just how much care and effort was put into this project.
