I’d like to think that I’ve always been “in the loop” when it came to the sneaker world and culture. I didn’t really start enjoying and appreciating shoes until after I graduated from college, but I managed to catch on rather quickly when it came to understanding and learning the back stories of sneaker brands and shoes. But it was only until I began working for Kicks On Fire that I realized how crazy and complex the sneaker world is when it comes to sneaker releases and the amount of shoes that come out every single day.
One of my responsibilities as a Kicks On Fire Editor is to provide you with the most up to date information regarding upcoming releases and anything sneaker related. Before my first day on the job, I thought to my self, “How in the hell am I going to find enough relevant information about sneakers/releases, five days a week?!” After my first complete day on the job, I realized how little I knew regarding the vast amount of releases that happen every single day of the year. I was wrong, I have plenty to write about every single day.
It seems like every other day there’s a certain shoe, pack, collection or collaboration that everyone and their little brother consider a “MUST COP”.
Which leads to my main point that I’d like to talk about today. If you happen to miss out on a certain release that you were really looking forward to, don’t sweat it, there’s always going to be another release down the line, surprisingly sooner than expected.
Now more than ever, the sneaker industry is booming. Reselling might not be what it used to be even just a year ago, but sneakers have become one of the hottest commodities in the fashion world and all the brands know it. Why do you think every brand comes out with a large amount of releases every single week? Like the saying goes, all brands are trying to “strike while the iron is hot”, meaning that they’re trying to capitalize on this current trend that has many people going crazy for shoes before it eventually comes back to earth. Don’t get me wrong, to many sneaker enthusiasts, shoes are not a trend but more of a lifestyle or extension of who they are. But those people hopping on the bandwagon because it’s “cool” are one of the reasons we have as many releases and options as we do.
So what do you do now? Did you miss out on the Air Jordan 11 Low that dropped last weekend? Do you get mad? Did you throw a fit on twitter and go HAM on the usage of angry emojis? I hope not. Relax, take a deep breath, and say to yourself, “On to the next one”.
In other words,
it’s not that serious!
Like everything in life, you’re not always going to get your way or get what you want. That’s just a part of life. Albeit, it may not be a good feeling, but that’s just the way it is. The nice thing about life is that tomorrow is another day and you start all over, just like in the sneaker world, tomorrow is a new day that brings new releases!
Take for example that Air Jordan 11 Low that you desperately needed. The release date has come and gone, and guess what, some of you still don’t have that shoe that you desperately needed. You wanted this shoe soooo bad, you needed it in your “collection”, but the sneaker gods didn’t come through. Damn. Did you survive the disappointment? Of course you did. Nothing has changed! You keep it moving. Let me tell you why.
The beauty of it all, is that down the line there will be another release or announcement about a shoe release that you never thought you would want to own even more than the aforementioned shoe we just talked about. Now all of a sudden that Air Jordan 11 Low you “desperately” needed is nothing more than a mere afterthought way in the back of your mind. You now have your eyes set on the Air Jordan 1 “Chicago”, or maybe the Nike Air Max 90 “Infrared”, or is it the recently revealed Nike KD 7 “What The”. What I’m trying to say is that just like that, you’re able to get over a shoe that you considered to be a “must cop” and now you’re looking ahead to the next “must cop” release. It’s a never ending cycle I tell ya’!.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but at the end of they day whether you end up getting the shoe or not, it’s perfectly fine either way, because tomorrow brings another day full of shoe releases, announcements and excitement. Life is too short to stress over a shoe you weren’t able to get. Who knows, maybe down the line you’ll be able to get it on a restock, right? But in the meantime,
Count your blessings, not your shoes.
