That’s Raymond Felton. Huh, sure could have fooled me…

Before sneaker blogs, before Twitter, before Instagram, before Nike Talk, there was SLAM. The monthly basketball bible for anybody under the age of 25 during the late 90s and early 2000s, SLAM was edgy, snarky and raw at a time when sports journalism was full of fortysomethings who could not understand why Allen Iverson was so important.

In many ways SLAM influenced the next generation of basketball journalists that you read today and set the stage for where sneaker culture is today. Once a month, sneakerheads got a chance to see what the players were wearing on the court and what was coming soon to their local stores. Meanwhile, websites and forums dedicated to kicks were slowly coming into their own and became strong voices in their own right.

Earlier today, an industrious fan of the magazine on Reddit (via Deadspin) took the time to scan a huge selection of pictures from the magazine’s heyday which includes quite a few classic kicks that have either seen a retro release recently or are still in the archives waiting to be revisited. You can check out the full collection of pictures on the link up top, but we’ve picked out some choice scans featuring some kicks that you might be familiar with or not…
