In 2008, the idea of NIKEiD offering current signature basketball shoes for customization seemed like a wacky idea. Up to that point, we had seen legacy models, Huarache 2K4s and runners offered on the site, but the idea of Nike giving us the ability to mess around with a signature model seemed unfathomable at the time. That all changed Christmas 2008, when NIKEiD offered sneakerheads a chance to design the Nike Zoom Kobe 4. The catch was only 24 people would be eligible per day to design their own custom Kobe 4s. It created a buzz for the Kobes and for NIKEiD so that when the time came to open it up for everybody, there was an instant demand. Damn, Nike’s so smart.
Anyways, after a fairly conservative rollout in terms of material options and colorways with the 4, the NIKEiD Kobes have gotten bolder and crazier in the successive years. We’ve seen gradient uppers, chroma accents, Kobe codes, snakeskin overlays, multicolor Flyknit and so much more that have produced some of the most memorable Kobes ever, sometimes even topping what we see in stores.
As we continue along this celebration of all things Mamba while also continuing our Fun With NIKEiD series, let’s take a look at what the Niketalk community has put together through the years (read: Google Image Search kept sending me to Niketalk so I gave up and just went straight to the source). It’s just a small sampling of what is out there in the forums, but I think you’ll get the idea of just how creative the community got and just how many options we have in creating our own custom Mambas (one of our writers did just that last night). Hopefully whatever the Nike Kobe 11 turns out to actually look like NIKEiD will be there to knock it out of the park.
