Right across from Bryant Park, the midtown Training Camp store attracts young trend-followers with its museum-like display of stylish urban kicks. Under elaborate glass chandeliers, a pair of wide benches upholstered in black quilted leather faces a long wall of shoes. Backlit by recessed lights so that they appear to glow, the shoes range from the simplest solid-color Keds to the most garish, splatter-patterned Nikes. Most of the collection skews toward such eye-catching looks as the bright cross-color DC shoes and the purple suede Supras, though quietly cool Tretorn boots can also be found. The wall opposite the shoes is hung with other urban gear, such as overcoats by the North Face and Spyder, bags from Manhattan Portage, and jeans from Levi’s. Despite the high-rent feel of the space, prices are fairly reasonable.
