The Nike Trainer 1 was Nike’s first athletic cross-traingin shoe. The designer, Tinker Hatfield came up with the idea of a multipurpose shoe as he was working in the gym and he saw people using two different pairs of shoe: one for running and one for weight training.

In 1987, the Nike Air Trainer hit the scene and was instantly a huge success. Nike decided to develop more technical Air Trainers and more new colorways. The original pair was actually reissued in the mid 1990s.

Nike also created a special skate edition pictured. In recent news, Nike has also released a hybrid version of the shoe which combines parts from the Nike Dunk Low and Nike Free.
