Tinker Hatfield was the designer of Nike Air Raid. Some people think the double strap system is just there for the look of the shoe, but it is actually what keeps the foot very secure. The ‘X-look’ appearance of the shoe led many people to associate it with Spike Lee’s Malcolm X.
The more flamboyant Nike Air Raid II was released in 1993. One shoe had a wood like effect on the midsole and the words ‘No Ref, No Wood’ on the back while the other have a peace sign on the strap with the slogan ‘Play Together, Live Together’.
In 2003, Nike decided to reissue the Air Raid and introduced five special editions which consisted of two Nike Battleground series and three for the Real Mad Hectic store in Japan. The original 1992 Limited Edition is extremely rare and is highly collectable.
