nike-huarache-light-side.jpgThe Nike Air Huarache Light was released in 1993, but its unusual styling made it less popular than the Air Huarache. Some say that this was down to its ’shark-like’ features and unusual colourway. The Air Huarache had radiant cool colours, while the Air Huarache Light was seen as very much the ‘ugly duckling’. In fact the only Huarache characteristic on the Light was the breathable stretch mesh upper. The nylon eyelets and low-profile outsole were unique.

In 2002, the Light was reissued. The timing seems to have been perfect. The original Light wasn’t mass-produced like the Air Huarache, and back in 1993 only two colourways were brought out: the men’s black / teal / aquamarine and the women’s white / purple / blue. The 2002 version was produced in fresh new colourways, which gave the Light a new fan base.

The most interesting editions were special make-ups for the clothing brand Stussy and Japan-based clothing store Beams. Leather was used on the Stussy editions. Beams went for a monotone feel with either all-black or all-grey upper. The most respected colourway, however, remains the original men’s black / teal / aquamarine.
