On the heels of a recent shoot I did for Girls Got Kicks, I figured that it was time I did one of these joints about myself. Having little to no experience writing an autobiographical editorial, bear with me. My sneaker back story begins back in the late eighties, when I began to take less interest in the pink and clear jelly’s and more interest in laced up treasures. My parent’s often referred to me as Punky Brewster, as I had often been known to walk to school in mismatched Chuck Taylor hi’s with contrasting socks. Fast forward to my first job, I would use every paycheck to put the next pair of Jay’s on layaway, until my collection was complete. To be honest, I stopped feelin’ most of the releases after the XII’s so I moved my attention to Dunks and Blazers [that is, until they became the new Air Force One]. Having over twenty years vested in the kick game I can say that my love for sneakers has always been rooted in the artistic design, and constant evolution of style. Having owned over 93 pairs in my adult life, I’m no hypebeast, don’t believe in Deadstock collecting and every pair of shoes in my closet has been worn. Check for me and quite a few other Sneaker loving divas in the new issue of Sneaker Freaker as well as the upcoming project, Girls Got Kicks.

BTW- I have yet to acquire my all time favorite kicks, the Tweed SB hi’s. If you know anyone that has them in a 6…I need them joints!

OneFlyShorty has been collecting kicks for about 7 yrs. She started collecting because she always felt as if sneakers were much more than shoes; they are individual pieces of art. OneFlyShorty is also drawn to the idea of having a completely distinct pair of sneakers and knowing how rare they are. Two of her favorite Jordans are the Laney XIVs [which she finally found in her size after nearly 10 years] and the BORDEAUX VII. Though her collection is fierce, she is still without her grails, the red white XII’s and white/infared VI’s.

RealizeDOP was first introduced to the whole sneaker craze by a good friend in college who was a Jordan collector. While appreciative of all kicks, she found herself to be a Dunk collector at heart. Above the collecting, RealizeDOP wanted to bridge the gap between love and culture by bringing the whole sneaker collecting world together. Together with two friends, she put together the first ever “North Carolina Sneaker Summit” to bring together collectors from all around the Carolinas and Virginias. For a first annual event, it was a huge success that brought together over 800 collectors, spectators and artists from the local community.

Nowadays, outside of collecting, she spends her time as a freelance fashion/costume designer and is a part of street wear brand FYSH CLOTHING CO. Something random, I love to cook and bake.

Already one of the flyest women in the entertainment industry,  Rihanna just looks that much flyer in a fresh pair of sneakers. She was spotted in New York City on Monday leaving the recording studio in some SB Blazer High Premium’s. Fly chick in fresh kicks? It gets no better.

Being from Chicago, SneakHerBox definitely had an affinity for Jordans. Her mother would buy her and her brother the same kicks, but around 7th grade her tastes starting changing. SneakHerBox received a pair of metallic blue Nike Air Force One jewels that she fell head over heels with. Years later, that love is still stronger than ever, as she spends her time surfing the buy/sell/trade forums and Ebay, looking for nostalgic pieces from her childhood, hoping to one day find her holy grail - the Air Jordan Bordeaux 7. Well, beloved male publication Playboy decided to hit up Chicago sneaker shop Leaders1354 to pick up a few pairs of shoes to show off on some of their playmates. Jamiieebabyy was introduced to Jordans & Nikes in high school by her friends, Zach & Khrysee. They were a family of collectors, including their dad. While her first pair of Jordans [black and gold 1s] were purchased in the 10th grade and her collection was progressing, it didn’t really get to be an obsession until she met her fellow sneakerfiend boyfriend, Ryan. Together they stalk out shops and search the net for her holy grails, the SpaceJam 11s, Tiffanys and Powder 9s.

Mis.Led! learned from her Mama at an early age that originality was a virtue. Her dad taught her what a dope pair of sneakers were and more importantly, how to lace ‘em and keep ‘em clean. As a youngin’ she was only allotted 1 pair of sneakers a year, so she had to keep them as fresh as she could. Once in high school, Mis.Led! got a job just so she could cop her own kicks without a hassle. Now, Mis.Led! takes pride in copping vintage or re-released gems that she could never afford back in the day…i.e. Bo Jacksons, Jordan Retro 6 (her absolute FAV pair of J’s ever), Huarache low tops, & Charles Barkley’s. Also, reaching back into her Boriqua roots had her coppin’ the AF-1 Puerto Rico series [2003 and 2004]. AshleytheSoleSista started collecting kicks at a young age, and was often teased by her parents for cleaning her shoes before her room. Most of her collection is comprised of 2004 and older Air Maxes, where her heart lies. In her town, female sneakerheads are rare, and she constantly gets stopped asking about her kicks. Her answer is always the same. “I buy what I like and I wear what I buy.” Even though her collection is quite large, she has a few that are quite special to her, particularly the Tattoo AF1s and Mean Green 95s.

Melissa7 only started collecting 8 months ago, but her shoe game is crazier than most people I know. At 17, she has over 60 pairs of sneakers, a ton of heat, and a serious passion for sneakers. It all started when she bought her first pair of Jordans, and fell in love. Soon there after, she attended her first Dunk Exchange, and found out the definition of the term “sneakerhead.”

People were selling shoes, trading, showing off their collections and people winning prizes just for having a rare shoe. I loved it. I bought my first pair of SB’s, the Sharks, while I was there. I found myself camping out in front of stores for the newest releases. My friends and I would spend days in line waiting for a pair.

While she loves the shoe game, she is often irritated by the commentary that she has a lot of kicks, ‘for a girl.’ She wants to be known and equally respected in the kick game, and hopes to contribute to making that happen.

Miss Amee got into the kick game through a past love, who was a hardcore shoe head. They spent their time scouring the streets of LA, looking for kicks that caught their eye; as she put it “…like digging for vinyls, we were digging for kicks…”

When asked about the stigma of being a girl in the kick game, she says, “I mean, you get your occasional haters who doubts your shoe knowledge because you’re a girl but other than that, most are impressed when they do see my collection. Being a girl does have it’s perk in the game though…I pay a lot less because I wear smaller sizes than the guys and sometimes our shoes are waaaay cuter! =)”
