I’m A Star…Introduced in the late 60’s the Adidas Superstar was a low-top version of the Pro model and was the first of its kind to be mad [low top basketball shoe]. Instantly identifiable by its rubber toe box, it quickly came to be known as the “shell toe”.
The style was quickly adopted by hip hop celebrities and achieved iconic status once hip hop group Run DMC started to rock ‘em. Their track My Adidas exalted the shoe, and therefore led to the group having their own Adidas shoe as well as clothing line.
A Bathing Ape Collaboration…..In 2003, Adidas teamed up with the Japanese clothing giant A Bathing Ape to create a limited edition to the Superstar shoe. It included intricate detail added on to the original model. For example, on the all white version, the shell toe was purposely yellowed slightly to mimic a pair of original Superstars. Lace badges and embossing techniques were also used to create this limited edited shoe. Four models were produced: 500 pairs of the commercially available models, and 100 special all-black limited edition pairs.
