The last two days have been a whirlwind for sneakerheads and movie buffs alike. The news of the Nike Mag dropping hit the web and spread like fire. For many of us, the Nike Mag represented the hopes and dreams associated with our childhood. It was a link to the fantasy world that we created, but this time the sacred treasure was actually going to be real, and not just a prop in a movie. Last night, I stood three feet away from that treasure.

The event started off with a social hour. I didn’t know a lot of the people their, but we did all have one thing in common: the Nike Mag. A few sneakerheads I have met over the years were in the building. The always fresh @RobSantini was there in his Space Jams 11s, sneaker collector extraordinaire @Franalations23 was there in his FLOM SBs, the always humble @Kingpoetic01 was rocking his Parra Air Max 1s, as well as all the other major sneaker sites. I spent most of my time wandering around taking pictures of the Montalban. Nike did a great job of converting the place to a sort of Back To The Future museum with a bunch of props from the movie. At about 10 the doors to the theater opened and that when the show really began.

As we all got situated in our seats, the music came up and none other than Araab Muzik went silly on the MPC mixing old school 80s music with crazy hip-hop sample and live beat creation at a breathtaking pace. Honestly, the delay on the large monitors kinda did him a disservice. I don’t think they people in attendance really understood how fast he moved while still keeping the music going.

After the music, we were greeted by Joel McChale, whom I worked with previously on NBC’s Community, and he gave introduced us to a few star players in the creation of the Nike Mag. First up was Christopher Lloyd. For those that don’t know, he is the man who plays Doc Brown. Additionally, we has a chance to preview the short clip below that has been making its way around the internet today that stars Kevin Durant, Tinker Hatfield, and Bill Hader, called Back For The Future.
It is at this point in the event when we realize that the event is about much more than the sneakers. The sneakers are just a vehicle to get us to see a larger issue. That issue of Parkinsons. Nike and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research came together and brought us a taste of one of our most cherished memories. The reason why? To fund research. To help others. It was then that the tag line “It’s About Time” started to make sense. It was time for us to help. To give of ourselves to make a difference. Of course I could go on about how they auctioned off pair of the shoes, but even then, the point of it all was money they received and how it would help others. Here are a few details about the project:
- 1500 pairs of the Nike Mag will be auctioned off for charity via ebay

Yeah great, maybe I'll sell my car or a kidney so I can afford a pair. What a bunch of hype for a product that will be unobtainable my 99% of the public.
