Before Nike+ was a glimmer in the eyes of the folks in Oregon, the folks at Puma has already put together and marketed the Puma RS Computer Shoe. Launched way back in the 80s, the 25 year-old shoes you see above were designed to basically do what Nike+ does today.
The shoes were affixed with pedometer computers that could be reset and would count up time and distance that could be then downloaded to the game port on the Apple II. (Sound familiar?) Aside from the huge heel, the design doesn’t look to different from the time period. However, it looks like the runner specific technology didn’t really take off, well, that is until Nike and Apple started doing it a few years back. So much for being an early adopter. Head over to Digibarn for more looks at the shoe, as well as some articles and video from the launch.
