The design team at Nike has been hard at work trying to improve on their old models and in doing so materials are key. You may have noticed a diamond shaped material being used in the upper of the new Air Max BW Gen II models but aside from pure aesthetics is a pretty remarkable invention named Torch.
Torch is a lightweight, moisture-managing, supremely comfortable three-layer textile. The outer layer features a visually stunning, protective diamond pattern that holds its shape and won’t crease at stress points like traditional materials. The middle layer offers a lightweight structural element that stands up to a post-match cool-down or an active day around town. The inner layer provides moisture-managing breathability to keep the foot cool and allow for a period of rest after a game.”Torch will make its debut in the Spring of 2010 on a number of silhouettes including the Air Max BW Gen II seen here, as well as other Nike favorites like the Air Force 1 and Air Maxim. What isn’t seen by the eye, is the Considered Design standards that are met in the process of making these shoes. Nike has been able to reduce waste and inefficiency by taking a modularity mindset into the creation process of these shoes.
